At a recent supplier conference Asda suppliers were told they have to pass unannounced BRC audits from October onwards.
Suppliers that do not comply will no longer receive Asda Technical approval. Asda seeks to tighten up its inspection regime after the horsemeat scandal. Whilst many suppliers welcome the opportunity to demonstrate their strong processes some say that they probably would not have chosen this. Most food businesses choose the announced option for the factory audit currently, giving them time to prepare for the audit. The unannounced scheme means the suppliers will be given no advance notice of the audit which can occur at any point between 3 to 12 months of the audit due date.
