Supplier approval and monitoring is a requirement for many businesses and GFSI endorsed standards, such as the BRC Standard for Food Safety. The BRC standard for Food Safety has greater emphasis placed on Supplier and Raw Material approval and performance monitoring. The approval procedure shall be based on risk and include either one, or a combination of:
- a valid certification to the applicable BRC standard or GFSI-benchmarked standard. The scope of the certification shall include the raw materials purchased.
- supplier audits, with a scope to include: product safety, traceability, HACCP review and good manufacturing practices, undertaken by an experienced and demonstrably competent product safety auditor.
It can be an onerous task to take on internally, especially if you have many new suppliers.
We can assist you in carrying out risk based assessments and audits either using your documentation or using our templates which can be tailored for your requirements. We will produce a written report detailing recommendations and corrective actions for improvement. You may wish to set up a supplier approval system that you can, after training, run internally yourself. A time consuming task for staff can be made much easier.
